Scholarship Opportunities

The LEAP Program and Undergraduate Advancement accept scholarship applications annually beginning in January. Scholarship opportunities for the 2017-18 academic year are shown below.

Please review scholarship requirements carefully before beginning an online application. If you have questions regarding your application please contact Liz Taylor (regarding LEAP scholarships) or Kirstyn Lofshult (regarding Undergraduate Advancement scholarships).

General Requirements

In order to be considered for LEAP and/or Undergraduate Advancement scholarships, applicants must:

  • Be admitted to or currently attending the University of Utah
  • Be a full-time student (12 credit hours) progressing satisfactorily toward their first undergraduate degree
  • Have graduated from a Utah high school OR be a US citizen OR legally present in the US.

In addition to the general requirements above, the scholarships listed below may have unique requirements, such as communities and/or academic programs you must be a part of, additional essays/personal statements, references, writing samples, or FAFSA applications. It is your responsibility to adhere to and/or provide any additional documentation that may be required.

Important Notice

The scholarship opportunities below are privately funded and are therefore exempt from the general state law that requires certification of U.S. citizen or lawfully present non-citizen status. If a student graduated from a high school within the state of Utah and is applying for only privately funded awards that are administered by the University of Utah, no certification is required.

Some of the opportunities below require proof of financial need. All applicants with a Social Security number are encouraged to complete a federal financial aid (FAFSA) application. DACA students may contact Dream Program Coordinator, Alonso R. Reyna Rivarola (alonso.reyna@utah.edu), with questions.

Students not able to file FAFSA may contact Amber Cook (acook@sa.utah.edu) in the University Scholarship Office for more information.

Available Scholarships

Asha Davenport Memorial Scholarship for LEAP Students

Asha was a freshman at the University of Utah at the time of her accidental death. She loved University life and all it had to offer. She was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and also a devoted member of the MUSS. She especially enjoyed her Service Learning LEAP class. Asha loved community service and helping others.

The Davenport family is giving two $2,000 scholarships to LEAP students.

Additional Scholarship Requirements:

  • 2.5 GPA
  • Must be enrolled in two semesters of the LEAP Program

Required Documents:

  • Typed personal statement of no more than one page, single spaced, written by the student addressing the topic: "How my LEAP experience has advanced my understanding of community service on campus or in my local community"

Asha Davenport Memorial Scholarship for Pi Beta Phi Students

Asha was a freshman at the University of Utah at the time of her death. She loved University life and all it had to offer. She was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and also a devoted member of the MUSS. She especially enjoyed her Service Learning LEAP class. Asha loved community service and helping others.

The Davenport family is giving one $2,000 scholarship to a Pi Beta Phi Sorority member.

Additional Scholarship Requirements:

  • 2.5 GPA
  • Must be a current Pi Beta Phi Sorority member

Required Documents:

  • Typed personal statement of no more than one page, single spaced written by the student addressing the topic: "Why helping people is important to me"
  • Resume of one page highlighting any extracurricular or community activities and/or service in which the student is involved

Community Partners in the New U Student Experience Mentoring Scholarship*

*Due Friday, February 24, 2017

Community Partners in the New U Student Experience are offering scholarships to sophomores, juniors, and seniors for the 2017-18 academic year. Scholarship amount is $2,000 and applicants have the opportunity to be paired with a mentor from the community. Participation in the mentoring component of this scholarship is highly encouraged.

Additional Scholarship Requirements:

  • 2.0 GPA
  • Applicant must be a sophomore, junior, or senior at the University of Utah

Required Documents:

  • Typed personal statement outlining your goals and aspiration while at the University of Utah and postgraduate plans
  • Resume of extracurricular and/or community activities
  • Transcripts

Ghulam-Lauri, Mohammed Alsolaiman Family & Zahir Family Scholarships

Available to students who have recent or current experience serving and working with the Muslim community as demonstrated through his/her academic performance, leadership, community service, and extracurricular activities. Scholarship amounts range from $2,000 $2,500.

Additional Scholarship Requirements:

  • 3.0 GPA
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need

Required Documents:

  • Typed personal statement of one page written by the student explaining their top three life goals
  • Resume of one page highlighting any extracurricular or community activities and/or service in which the student is involved
  • Transcripts

Ivory Homes Building Dreams Scholarship

Ivory Homes is providing several $2,000 scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year to students who have demonstrated experience serving and working with the Latina/Latino community. Preference will be given to first generation students.

Additional Scholarship Requirements:

  • Applicants must be entering freshmen or Salt Lake Community College transfer students (SLCC transfer students must have completed 30 credit hours or more at the time of their application, have lived in Utah for three or more years, and graduated from a Utah high school)
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need

Required Documents:

  • A one-page personal statement explaining: (a) what you hope to achieve with your degree and (b) if applicable, why you have an interest in the home building and construction industry
  • Resume of one page highlighting any extracurricular or community activities and/or service in which the student is involved
  • High school or SLCC transcripts

Ivory Homes Renewal Application

Renewal funds are available to former Ivory Homes Scholarship Recipients who are first generation continuing students at the University of Utah during the 2017-18 academic year.

Additional Scholarship Requirements:

  • In order to be considered for renewed funding, students must demonstrate involvement in community service and/or leadership. Current Ivory Homes Renewal Scholars must have completed Diversity Scholars and at least one high school conference by March 5, 2017, in order to be considered.

Required Documents:

  • A one-page personal statement written by the student explaining how continued funding will contribute to achieving your educational and career goals
  • Resume of one page highlighting any extracurricular or community activities and/or service in which the student is involved
  • Transcripts

June Mason Konrad Endowed Scholarship

This $1,000 scholarship is available to entering freshmen students who have graduated from a high school in Box Elder County, Utah.

Additional Scholarship Requirements:

  • 2.0 GPA
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need

Required Documents:

  • Typed essay of one to two pages written by the student addressing the topic: "What I learned growing up in Box Elder County"
  • Official high school transcripts

LEAP Diversity-Need Scholarship

This scholarship is for LEAP students who have demonstrated financial need, belong to or have demonstrated experience serving and working with traditionally under-represented and/or diverse communities, and demonstrate involvement in University and/or community activities with an emphasis on leadership and service. Several $2,000 scholarships will be awarded. Funding provided by Ruth Eleanor and John Ernest Bamberger Memorial Foundation and Goudie Trust.

Additional Scholarship Requirements:

  • 2.0 GPA
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need by completing FAFSA no later than March 5, 2017
  • Must be enrolled in two semesters of the LEAP Program

Required Documents:

  • Typed personal statement of no more than one page, single spaced written by the student addressing the topics:"How my LEAP experience has advanced my understanding of community" or "How I have worked with or been a part of underrepresented and/or diverse communities and in what way this has impacted my life and university experience"

LEAP Financial Need Scholarship

This scholarship is for LEAP students who can demonstrate financial need. Several $2,000 scholarships will be awarded. Funding provided by Castle Foundation and Parent Fund.

Additional Scholarship Requirements:

  • 2.0 GPA
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need by completing FAFSA no later than March 5, 2017
  • Must be enrolled in two semesters of the LEAP Program

Required Documents:

  • Typed personal statement of no more than one page, single spaced, written by the student addressing the topic:"How my LEAP experience has advanced my understanding of communityandhas impacted my life and university experience"

LEAP Multi-Year LEAP Scholarship

This scholarship is for LEAP students who are enrolled in the LEAP multi-year courses, which include Architecture, Health Science, Pre-Law and Pre-Nursing. Funding provided by Henry W. & Leslie M Eskuche Foundation and Goudie Trust.

Additional Scholarship Requirements:

  • 2.0 GPA
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need by completing FAFSA no later than March 5, 2017
  • Must be enrolled in two or more semesters of any of the Multi-Year LEAP classes that are part of the LEAP Program

Required Documents:

  • Typed personal statement of no more than one page, single spaced, written by the student addressing the topic:"How my experience in my Multi-Year LEAP course(s) has impacted by University experience"

LEAP Peer Advisor Scholarship & Jan Frost Award

Several $2,000 scholarships will be awarded. Funding is provided by Lindquist/Moore Family.

The Frost Award will be given to the outstanding peer advisor. $500 cash award is provided by Dr. Jan Frost, retired LEAP instructor. All eligible applicants will be entered into this pool.

Additional Scholarship Requirements:

  • 3.0 GPA
  • Must be a current year LEAP Peer Advisor

Required Documents:

  • Typed personal statement of no more than one page, single spaced, written by the student addressing the topic:"How my employment as a Peer Advisor has affected my University experience"
  • One letter of recommendation from your LEAP instructor whom you have served as a Peer Advisor
  • Copies of your Peer Advisor hours you have submitted thus far

Student Success Scholarship*

*Due Monday, July 31, 2017

The Student Success Scholarship offers a $7,000 award to an entering freshman who will be participating in a learning community. In their subsequent academic years, recipients are eligible to receive up to two $1,000 awards for participation in deeply engaged learning experiences as well as a $1,000 award for participation in a Capstone Initiatives project. Students with financial need will be given priority consideration.

Additional Scholarship Requirements:

  • 3.3 GPA
  • Must be an entering freshman student at the University of Utah
  • Participate in Learning Community

Required Documents:

  • Typed personal statement of no more than one page, single spaced written by the student addressing the topic: "how deeply engaged learning makes a difference in education"
  • Resume highlighting the following:
    • Academics
    • Community engagement
    • Work experience
    • Extra-curricular activities
  • Transcripts

Travis Rigby Scholarship

The Travis Rigby Endowed Scholarship awards up to $5,000 in scholarships each year to Daily Utah Chronicle staff members with preference given to staff writers.

Additional Scholarship Requirements:

  • 2.0 GPA
  • Must be a current Daily Utah Chronicle staff member

Required Documents:

  • Two published writing samples from The Daily Utah Chronicle
  • Typed personal statement of one to two pages written by the student addressing the topics: "How working as a journalist at The Chronicle will impact my education and future career" and "why receiving this scholarship is important to my experience as a student"
  • Professional resume of work experience and extracurricular/community activities in which the student is involved

Utah Community Action Head Start Scholarship (formerly Salt Lake CAP Head Start)

Available to entering freshmen and continuing University of Utah students who participated in a Salt Lake or Tooele County Head Start Program as a child. This scholarship provides tuition for 12 credit hours and room and board for Fall 2017 and Spring 2018.

Additional Scholarship Requirements:

  • 2.0 GPA
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need
  • Must exhibit academic promise, leadership potential, and a commitment to community service

Required Documents:

  • Typed personal statement of one page written by the student addressing the topic: "How the Head Start program benefited you as a child and outlining your life goals"
