At the University of Utah, students must demonstrate proficiency that is equivalent to two years of foreign language study in order to meet the Foreign Language Requirement for the Bachelor of Arts degree. Upon completion of the foreign language requirement, students are assessed for their ability to comprehend and produce the foreign language in speaking and in writing and for their understanding of foreign language learning as a life-long endeavor that enhances their education in the Humanities.
Students opting to pursue the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree must complete the Foreign Language Requirement. In this requirement, students must complete course work equivalent to at least fourth semester (2020 level) competency in either a foreign language or sign language.
Students can use the following languages to meet the requirement:
- Greek (Ancient/Modern)
The BA Foreign Language Requirement is overseen by the Department of Languages and Literature. There is no committee for the requirement.
A minimum grade of C- or CR in the approved courses is required to complete this requirement. Minimum grade does not apply to pre-requisites. Please check with the department first. If the course is a requirement for a major, it must be taken for a letter grade and CR/NC is not an option.
